Polygamy is the practice of custom of having more than one wife or husband at the same time. Polygamy is one of the main factor contributing to the rapid spread of HIV in the sub Saharan African countries.
The fact that polygamy is sustained by rapid remarriage of divorcees and, widows often becoming the second or third wives of polygamous mean HIV prevalence among these women especially the widow in countries where there is generalized HIV AND AIDS epidemic is higher than among never married women. This would of course facilitate a relatively rapid spread of HIV which is significantly lower in monogamous marriages.
Polygamy in other words ensures that those who are most at risk of transmitting the virus are incorporated into sexual regimes of lower intensity. This coital dilution effect could be due to simple “resource constrains” on polygamous husbands who are expected to treat all their wives equally, alternatively, the. Husbands or partners may recognize the increased threat of infection from previously married women and thus make conscious behavioral adjustments.
Traditional, cultural practices are often mistakenly accused of being responsible for the relatively rapid spread of HIV in African population.in several African societies the deceased husbands brother or another relative is expected to inherit the widow and that practice is often preceded by a widow cleansing ritual that may include intercourse with the new husband or another designated man.This practices implies a non-negligible risk of transmitting HIV.At the societal level ,however the practice of widow inheritance provides a safety net for the widow who remains embedded in the lineage of her late husband and her livelihood is at least in the principle ensured. If a widow remarries her late husband’s relative she is also likely to become the second or third wife in a polygamous marriage and that is usually accompanied by a reduction in her sexual activity level, where polygamy and widow inheritance are not practiced however, a widow may need to seek an alliance with another man or perhaps several men to secure her own and her young children. If she had indeed been infected by her deceased husband that process will induce an even greater risk of transmitting HIV.

ReplyDeletePolygamy has lead to increased infections or chances of infections .most spouces in a polygamous setting in this day end age have "side dishes ," mistresses or sponsor's outside their marriages and the chain is endless hence risking infections.
Wife inheritance is some communities has also led to spread of the virus .since some become widows and widowers due to their spouces dying of HIV and Aids.hence increase spread of the virus to the family they have been inherited into.
Despite the fact that most of the countries are now digitilized some parts of the communities are still analogue thus practising traditional cultural ways like polygamy and wife inheritance.polygamy has lead to wide spread of HiV this is because having sex with more than one partner ,and in case one is positive there will be spread of HIv.Wife inheritance also spread HIV living behind widow and widowers whom they can also spread the disease.by Christine

Having more than one spouse has consequences. Either one of them has STIs and has no clue about their status but since poligamy is a traditional custom, people in the society take part in this culture. In the near future, Hiv is spread widely due to the wife inheritance scenario.

Polygamy increases chances of HIV infection since if one person brings the virus to the husband all women will be infected and if the husband should die inheritance will take place hence infecting others and in these types of marriages some wives tend to have extra marital affairs since maybe the husband may not pay enough attention hence leading to another transmission to the person they are having extra marital affairs with
