CONTRIBUTION OF POLYGAMY IN THE SPREAD OF HIV

CONTRIBUTION OF POLYGAMY IN THE SPREAD OF HIV
Polygamy is the practice of custom of having more than one wife or husband at the same time. Polygamy is one of the main factor contributing to the rapid spread of HIV in the sub Saharan African countries.
The fact that polygamy is sustained by rapid remarriage of divorcees and, widows often becoming the second or third wives of polygamous mean HIV prevalence among these women especially the widow in countries where there is generalized HIV AND AIDS epidemic is higher than among never married women. This would of course facilitate a relatively rapid spread of HIV which is significantly lower in monogamous marriages.
Polygamy in other words ensures that those who are most at risk of transmitting the virus are incorporated into sexual regimes of lower intensity. This coital dilution effect could be due to simple “resource constrains” on polygamous husbands who are expected to treat all their wives equally, alternatively, the. Husbands or partners may recognize the increased threat of infection from previously married women and thus make conscious behavioral adjustments.
Traditional, cultural practices are often mistakenly accused of being responsible for the relatively rapid spread of HIV in African population.in several African societies the deceased husbands brother or another relative is expected to inherit the widow and that practice is often preceded by a widow cleansing ritual that may include intercourse with the new husband or another designated man. This practices implies a non-negligible risk of transmitting HIV.At the societal level ,however the practice of widow inheritance provides a safety net for the widow who remains embedded in the lineage of her late husband and her livelihood is at least in the principle ensured. If a widow remarries her late husband’s relative she is also likely to become the second or third wife in a polygamous marriage and that is usually accompanied by a reduction in her sexual activity level, where polygamy and widow inheritance are not practiced however, a widow may need to seek an alliance with another man or perhaps several men to secure her own and her young children. If she had indeed been infected by her deceased husband that process will induce an even greater risk of transmitting HIV.
