PREPs and PEPs

PREP AND PEP
Pre-exposure prophylaxis [Prep] is the course of HÎV drug taken by negative people to prevent infection.  It can virtually eliminate the risk of getting HIV If taken consistently and correctly. But it cannot protect you from other sexual transmitted infections such as hepatitis c, gonorrhea etc. condoms are still the best protection from this STIs. Prep is not taken or life, it’s only for a short period when a person may be at high risk of HIV infection. Truvada is currently the only drug approved for use as Prep. Truvada is a single pill that is a combination of two anti-hIv drugs: tenofovir and emtricitabine. Prep has shown to be highly effective, reducing the risk of contracting HIV by 92%.
Prep can prevent HIV infection during both vaginal and anal sex, but these drugs in Prep are absorbed much more effectively by rectal tissue than vaginal tissue. This means the option for how you take Prep are different depending on the sex you have. To prevent HIV infection through the vagina, Prep needs to be taken every day. You need to take PrEP for 7 days before you are protected and every day if you want protection. But if your risk is from anal sex you have to take it daily or even based Prep
Post exposure prophylaxis [PEP] means taking antiretroviral medicine [ART] after being potentially exposed to HIV to prevent becoming infected. PEP must be taken within 72 hours after a recent possible exposure to HIV, but sooner you start PEP the better. Every hour counts. If you’re prescribed PEP, you will need to take it twice daily for 28 days. PEP is effective in preventing HIV when administered correctly, but not 100% so you should continue to use condoms with sex partners and safe injections practice while taking PEP.

  1. I agree with you that's condoms are best at end of the day, but in your article I think I would have been better if you also told us of the prolonged effects of using PREP and PEP ...for instance in my own opinion the more some is used to using all these the more chances are of failure and hence a high risk of exposure to HIV

  4. I am confused with PEP treatment, specifically about the side effects.

From sexual health charities I hear that PEP treatment can cause occasional side effects which may or may not go over the 28 days treatment. Another one (THT) says that the side effects are extreme and about 1 in 5 people on PEP stop taking it as a result.

The sexual health nurse said that side effects on PEP are very common and are severe.

Since pep and preps can prevent infection of HIV/AIDS i think there is also some effects of using them.it is good to look both advantage and disadvantages of using them, because at the same time you can use them and because they prevent only hiv at the end of it you find yourself having STIs and also becoming pregnant.by faith

  34. I think to be most effective, PEP should be started within a few hours of exposure to HIV. If it is not started within 72 hours (3 days) it is not likely to work. So the sooner it’s started after exposure, the greater the chance of working.
