FACTORS FUELING THE SPREAD OF HIV

According to World Health Organization (WHO), the developing countries have the highest number of HIV/AIDS infections in the whole world. There are approximately 32 million people living with the virus in these countries.

The worst hit regions include Sub-Saharan Africa, Caribbean, and South-East Asia. The countries with the highest HIV prevalence rates and the largest number of HIV-positive people in these regions include South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Tanzania, Swaziland, Lesotho, Botswana, Zambia, Uganda, Mozambique, Ghana, Bahamas, Belize, Jamaica, Haiti, India, Thailand, Nepal, Myanmar, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

The spread of the virus decreased from 15% in 1990 to around 8% in 2015, but more than 6 million new infections occur every year in these countries. This is according to Center for Disease Control (CDC).

Factors that Fueling the Spread of HIV/AIDS Includes:
1.Ignorance

Most people living in these regions are fully aware of the disease, but they continue to get involved in practices that fuel its transmission. This is ignorance, and it is adversely driving the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the whole world, not just the developing countries

2.Promiscuity

Promiscuity is now the leading cause of the spread of HIV in the developing regions. Many people are having more than one sexual partner, and also prostitution is common in the regions

3.Illiteracy

The Third World countries have a large percentage of people who know very little about HIV/AIDS. Most people know the disease exists, but they lack information about its aspects
4.Drug and Alcohol Use

Drug and alcohol use is quite common among the youth in the developing regions. According to studies, there have been consistent new HIV infections resulting from sharing of injectors among the drug users in these regions.

5.HIV/AIDS Stigma

People living with the virus are still stigmatized in the developing world, and this is causing many people to avoid HIV testing. Most people who manage to get tested do not reveal their status if they have been found to have the virus. They also find it difficult to get antiretroviral (ARV) drugs or to use them in the presence of other people.
6.Poverty

The developing world has a large population of people living in poverty. Most poor people are forced to do anything to earn a living, including engaging in sexual activities which are a high-risk factor for the disease.
There have been many cases of young people getting involved in commercial sex in these countries. This activity has been studied to tremendously increase the disease prevalence. Poor people also have limited access to education which means that illiteracy is common among them.

7.Cultural Factors

The most common cultural factors fueling the spread of HIV/AIDS in the developing world include polygamy and wife inheritance. These cultural practices are specifically common in Africa.

8.Immigration and Movement of People

First, HIV/AIDS was introduced in most of these developing regions by people from other countries (i.e., the developed ones). And even today, there is a big number of new infections that are caused by immigrants.
Second, the movement of people within these regions has been increasing the spread of the disease. Infected people spread the virus when they move to work or study in areas that are free from the disease. This is one of the reasons for the high prevalence rates in urban centers that are located along the major highways
9.Lack of Access to Maternity Services

The developing countries lack enough maternity services for all their pregnant women. Most women, especially those in remote areas, bear children without the help of trained healthcare providers
10.Dry sex

This is having sexual intercourse with a woman without vaginal lubrications.Lacking vaginal lubrications is not all that natural thing but its mainly course by putting contortions on the vagina, using herbal aphrodisiacs, household detergents, antiseptics, using herbal aphrodisiacs, household detergents, antiseptics amongst other methods. Its is believed that removal of the vaginal fluid increase its tightness thus more sexual pleasure is attained but thus on the other hand very dangerous because it increases friction and this develops cuts on the sexual intercourse which might result to the transmission of HIV.
11.War and armed conflicts

Most sub Saharan countries have continuous endless civil wars. They engage in wars with armed weapons like pangas that they cut one person to the other. In this case even if you don't actually dies there is exchange of blood which might led to the transmission of the disease.

  3. Illiteracy is the key lead .
We tend to think we have all the information about the disease ,eg its deadly.
If we would have more knowledge spread across the region it would lower the spread hence reducing stigmatisation

  5. The article is very educative. Ignorance, promiscuity, illiteracy and Hiv/Aids stigma are the key factors fueling the spread of Hiv/Aids.People should stop the ignorance behaviour and have the desire to know their status whereby, after being discovered with the disease a medicine is given upon which helps to strengthen the immune system and helps one to have a longer life.Education about Hiv/Aids should continue being given to people everytime which helps to reduce spread of Hiv through preventation and control measuremeasures.Sex partners should be faithful and open to each other.by christine.

  6. I think the major cause in African countries is ignorance because a lot of effort has been put in educating people in schools, health facilities, social media, radios, TVs and even visible sign boards but still people engage in activities for instance practising unprotected sex with many partners mostly youth but also people from rural areas carelessly share personal items with HIV infected people... I blame ignorance for most of this...

  7. This is an educative article whereby,,, In Africa internal conflicts and wars have fuelled the spread of HIV. Conflicts and wars separate families and therefore encourage promiscuous sexual behavior of the spouses.

  9. Polygamy and wife inheritance in the developing countries also is among the cause of spread of HIV.having several partner which only contribute to love triangle and rotation of the disease among the victims for one of the partner acquire it from someone and pass it to the other and the circle continues as wife inheritance in the other hand getting remarried to the widow without knowing the course of the late husbands death

  10. In addition to your well detailed article ,peer pressure in institutions has lead to HIV and Aids spread .This is mainly by cults that students join in universities and colleges where blood oaths are taken by cutting of the flesh n joining the cut areas against each other ,sexual gangs are made and endulge in group sex activities, popularity contests among peers on who has laid the most girls in campus etc
Therefore, HIV education should be emphasized and institutions should be endulged to go for victim vists in hospitals etc so as they can see and feel the reality on the ground and this will help reduce the infections in institutions

  14. Illetaracy also fuels the spread of HIV since people are not aware on how the virus is transmitted from one person to another. Wife inheritance is also another factor but the practice is not practised in our today lives since is an outdated believe. Ignorance is also not left behind since people are aware that the disease do exist but still can't use protective measures.By Naomi

  37. The youths of today are exposed to the risk of being victims of HIV/AIDS - trend which is
gaining momentum as year‟s progress.Other factors contributing to the spread of HIV/AIDS among the youths are: inadequate sexual health information; limited access to health care; cultural, social and economic factors and sexual health attitudes and behavior. Some youth have adequate information on HIV/AIDS but their health seeking behavior is wanting and cultural and socio-economic factors influence the spread of HIV/AIDS among them.

  38. I can say Illiteracy is the most common key factor because Most sub Saharan countries have high level of illiterate individuals thus there is inadequate knowledge of controlling the transmission of HIV/AIDS in the region. The aspect of brain drain as well come in where the educated individuals are working in the diaspora where there is high income rather than their mother land.
