EFFECTS OF HIV ON THE EDUCATION SECTOR
HOW HIV/AIDS AFFECTS THE EDUCATION SECTOR
There are four main 'institutional arenas' that collectively determine how the AIDS epidemic will affect the supply of and demand for education, namely the household, community, school, and government. The epidemic could lower the demand for schooling in three main ways: •
Smaller student intakes: Lower fertility levels will lead to smaller than expected cohorts of six year olds over the next few decades. In the worst affected countries, it is anticipated that the school-aged populations will actually contract.
• Impact on students: As the numbers of orphans, caregivers and children with AIDS related illnesses increase, the educational performance of these children is likely to deteriorate. More specifically, intake rates could fall and repetition and dropout rates increase.
• Level of poverty: Parents and guardians will be poorer because of the macroeconomic impacts of HIV. They will be less able therefore to support their children’s schooling through the payment of fees, purchase of supplies, etc. The supply of educational services could be affected by changes in:
• Teacher requirements: The number of teachers who will die of AIDS-related illnesses is expected to increase rapidly in high-prevalence countries during the next 10-15 3 years. At the same time, however, lower than expected student enrolments will reduce the demand for new teachers.
• Teacher productivity: There will be increased levels of absenteeism and morbidity among teachers, which will result in a reduction in the number teacher-hours available. In addition, there are factors, which have potentially sizeable resource implications for the education sector. These include:
• HIV/AIDS education in schools: It has become necessary to either institute or enhance sexual and reproductive health education in schools. This will require substantial investment in materials and person.
In addition to stigma, orphans have to overcome many barriers if they are to continue schooling. Stigma and prejudice lead to social isolation. About two thirds of children born to HIV positive mothers do not contract the virus and hence have the potential to grow up as any other child. Evidence suggest that AIDS orphans are more likely to die from preventable disease because of the mistaken belief that their illness must be due to AIDS, and that medial help is thus pointless (UNAIDS 1997). HIV/AIDS will also affect the process and content of education in Kenya. The seriousness of HIV/AIDS means that it needs to be integrated into curriculum for students throughout the country. Illness and deaths among the administrative staff at national, regional and local level will negatively affect the system’s ability to plan, manage and implement policies and
Programs, and will further distract the planning and managing of educational resources e.g. the projection and planning of future teacher deployment, management and planning of future teacher deployment, management and recruitment will be extremely difficult. The loss of trained and experienced teachers and interruption of teaching programmed due to illness will reduce the quality of educated. A study by Armour-Thomas et al (1989), found that teacher qualification accounted for more than 90 of the variation in student achievement in mathematics and reading across the grade levels. The loss of the most qualified and experienced teacher have hence represents a serious threat to the quality of education. An important challenge for HIV/ADIS awareness is how to reach as many people as possible, as soon as possible with relevant and correct information so as to help curb the menace, through positive behavior change.
It’s upon me and you to come together and fight this (giant) HIV and AIDS before we are wiped before our own eyes. Together we can we can educate support to bring this to a minimal REMEMBER IT STARTS WITH.

HIV/AIDS education should be introduced to the curriculum starting from the lower primary level by so doing This will help our children to be more aware of the effects and symptoms to HIV,Hence from the tender ages they will be warned about it.this will help in prevention of stigmatization of people living with HIV hence improving the school attendace since the kids are able to accept their fellows who maybe infected or their families. ReplyDeleteHIV/AIDS has negatively affected a lot on the education sector, First , a student or a pupil suffering from HIV/AIDS loses his/her concentration in class especially if other students reacts negatively towards him/her, this will lead to poor academic performance, second a student whose parent or relative is suffering from HIV/AIDS cannot concentrate well in class especially if he/she flashbacks what her parent is going through.Their concentration can only be improved if they are guided and counselled on what to do and what to avoid , and also all students and teachers should learn to accept the HIV infected pupils and students.
