CHILDREN LIVING WITH HIV/AIDS

CHILDREN LIVING WITH HIV/AIDS.
The number of kids who are infected with HIV is going down since 2015 . It's the leading cause of death
among preteens and teens there. HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, damages your immune system, so you
can't fight infections and some cancers well. But with the right combination of drugs and loving support,
kids with HIV can grow up to live long, fulfilling lives.
CAUSES.
Most children who have HIV got it from their mother when she was pregnant, during the birth process,
or from breastfeeding.
Children can be infected through sexual abuse or rape. In some countries, child marriages are culturally
accepted, and a young girl could get HIV from her older husband, and then pass it to her babies, too. The
younger a child is when they first have sex, the higher their chances of getting HIV are.
SYMPTOMS.
Brain or nervous system problems such as seizures, trouble walking, or doing poorly in school.
Being sick often with childhood illnesses such as an ear infection, a cold, an upset stomach, or diarrhea.
TREATMENT.
Children get pretty much the same treatment as adults: a combination of medications called ART
(antiretroviral therapy). But it isn't that simple, because some HIV drugs don't come in a liquid form that
babies and small children can swallow. And some drugs cause serious side effects for kids.Kids with HIV
and AIDS can safely go to school. But they may face bullying and discrimination unless the other students
and teachers understand how HIV spreads. Awareness and education programs help break down the
stigma around HIV so that children can have friends and feel normal growing up.
Without ART, one-third of HIV-positive infants worldwide won't make it to their
birthday, and half will die before they're 2.
GROWING UP WITH HIV.
Kids with HIV and AIDS can safely go to school. But they may face bullying and discrimination unless the
other students and teachers understand how HIV spreads. Awareness and education programs help
break down the stigma around HIV so that children can have friends and feel normal growing up.
N/B all children are special and should be treated with love and care despite them being affected with
HIV .The government should try and help the orphans that are infected with HIV and the society should
even help them .

  1. Children in schools are highly discriminated upon if they are known that their parents died of the virus and this affects their esteem and performance in school.
Worse is that some teachers ,lecturers etc are not encouraging them or even making them feel better as the institutions continue requesting for compulsory medical tests indicating once HIV status I don't think it is necessary unless student is pursuing a food handling course ?

  3. The number of children living with HIV is increasing day to day.HIV towards a child may be brought maybe through breastfeeding,,when the mother is pregnant ,the birth process or even through a sexual rape. This brings discrimination and the academic level of these children lowers in school this is because obviously these children will be stressed and lack peace of their mind whenever they think of their disease. The best option for them is to accept themselves ,for the teachers and students also accept them and show love to them and the ways of becoming successful person in their future life.by christine

  4. Most children living with HIV and AIDS probably got the infection through birth ,,,the kids face a lot of problems in there early lives i.e its tiresome to take ARVs for a child on daily basis ,there is descrimination from friends hence might end up traumatizing the kid and makes them lack affection and love.......by Immaculate

  5. To prevent child infection, mother's should make sure that they consider hospital delivery to protect their children from getting infected.Infected children should be taken care of and they should grow under medication to strengthen their immunity.

  9. Many parents whose children are born with HIV/AIDS do not disclose the information about the status to their children because of one reason or another , some fear that the child may not accept the situation and may end up losing hope. This brings about depression to the child once he/she realizes for himself/herself,

  15. Children born with HIV or infected during breastfeeding suffer from a range of health-related problems such as impaired immune systems and increased vulnerability to infections including diarrhea, pneumonia and tuberculosis more so children who are born with HIV may also experience developmental or cognitive delays that affect their behavior, learning, and emotions.

  16. HIV is somewhat different in children than in adults. Children living with HIV normally have much higher CD4 cell counts than adults living with HIV, but may also have higher viral loads of HIV in the blood. In adults, HIV weakens a fully mature immune system. In children, HIV attacks a developing immune system. As a result, children living with HIV - even those on HIV drugs - are more likely than both HIV-negative children and adults living with HIV to get bacterial infections, including ear infections and pneumonia. 21. Children living with HIV who are not taking HIV drugs may also have more learning and thinking problems. Some of these thinking and behavioral difficulties, as well as many of the illnesses , can be prevented by taking HIV drugs. Children living with HIV who take HIV drugs can now grow into healthy adults, get jobs, have HIV-negative children – and make many of their dreams come true.

  22. Since most children who are infected by HIV were born positive, the best way to prevent HIV in children is to create awareness for every pregnant women to visit hospital and get tested for HIV virus,if they are found positive they should be encouraged on the need to stick with treatment to avoid giving birth to positive baby's.

  25. Children suffer great stigmatization especially when taking ARVs most parents don't disclose why they have to be on medication now and then and in most schools they don't allow admission of them which is so sickening and some parents in other scenario end up dying without notifying what they were suffering from.I think the children should be notified as soon as possible

However, a lack of necessary investment and resources for adequate testing, paediatric ARVs and child-friendly prevention programmes mean children continue to suffer the consequences of the epidemic.
