REDEFINATION OF HIV/AIDS
HIV Stands for human immunodeficiency virus. It was discovered in 1980s as a terminal illness but later in the 90s,it became quite torelable due to treatment. It targets the white blood cells that fight diseases in the body, specifically the CD4 cells,also known as T cells.
HIV has various stages. The initial state has Flu like symptoms, while the second stage may last for approximately 10years.On the third stage, the immune system can no longer fight diseases hence leading to an advanced stage which is AIDS.
However, HIV has no cure but can be managed though antiretrovital therapy. This entails a combination of medicines that prevent the growth of the virus.
AIDS is an advanced stage in people infected with HIV. A healthy person has 500- 1000CD4 cells. If these cells fall below 200, an individual is diagnosed with AIDS.
This indicates the immune system has been severely compromised, making as individual vulnerable to various illnesses.
Massive spread of HIV increases hosts of other diseases and infections. HIV /AIDS is not One. The connection between the two is that: to have developed AIDS you must have HIV.
Poor health literacy creates barriers of knowing one's status. Let us remind each other and sensitize the community through investing in information to curb this grave threat epidemic.

ReplyDeleteHiv/Aids is a deadly disease that once it enters the body it directly goes to the white blood cells and finally to the CD4 cells.A normal person has 500-1000 CD4 cells. If the cells fall below 200, a person is diagnosed with Aids. Aids victims can easily get other diseases due to their weak immune system. By Naomi.

It is true that HIV/AIDs has no cure .A normal person has 500-1000CD4 cells.If the cells falls below 200 the person is said to have Aids.So,people should be tested in advance to know their status and start antriretrovital drugs earlier..... by Christine

ReplyDeletei agree with what hellen has said because once the virus enters in a health person's body goes direct to the white blood cell specifically CD4 cell.the virus multiplies into a millions.In the process of coming out destroys the cell and making the immuniy of the person to be weak. HIV is highly effective.Many peoples CD4 count will star to climb after treatment.Long term theraphy can result in your CD4 count returning to the normal level of your age...Some people CD4 cell count do not increase ,or rise very slowly ,even though their viral load is "undetected"

ReplyDeleteRedifination means defining something again or differently. Hiv when properly treated, it isn't the killer it once was. Modern medicine has stret hed the life-span of HIV positive patients to near normal levels. Prevention is key but early detection can control the disease enough to live a near normal life through strict adherence to the ARVs.
