COMMUNITIES ATTITUDE TOWARDS HIIV

To be able to deal with HIV/AIDS in our community, it is important to look at our own attitude towards people living with the disease.Anyone can get HIV/AIDS , maybe it doesn't matter how a person get infected because some are born with it and others got it through rape, what matters is that we support them.
A big percentage of people in the community have negative attitudes towards HIV/AIDS and people living with it.Most of them especially the youth do not go for HIV testing not because they do not want to know their status but because of that fear that if found positive they will be exposed.Seeing of how the infected people have been stigmatized in the society ,no one can bear being separated from the community by being open about his/her status. The community has ignored its own problems mainly because they fear that HIV/AIDS infected people brings a negative impact or change in the community . Others believe that one can get infected by associating with the infected people, this has affected a lot because  the infected people have been left alone without anyone to care for them.
Our community needs people with courage and compassion for others and people who are able to respond to the physical and emotional needs of the infected people. This can only be done when we have a positive attitude towards the infected people. We need to accept that HIV/AIDS is there and it is a dangerous disease. It should be brought to openness.Everyone needs to be aware that anyone can get infected with HIV/AIDS an therefore those who are not infected should not feel that pride that they are more special compared to the infected ones.
HIV/AIDS infected people should be accepted as part of the community and they should be treated equally without any stigmatization. They should have that feeling that they  are cared for and loved just the same way the others feel. This will give them hope especially those who had loosed hope in living.Caring for someone infected by HIV/AIDS takes a lot of courage and compassion, therefore  everyone in the community should set aside the pride, ignorance and selfishness and cope up with this problem.

  1. I strongly disagree with "Anyone can get HIV"
Large percentage of people get it through careless sex "unprotected sex", and ignorance.

    1. Not everyone in the community has an attitude towards them.
It could be lack of knowledge. Now that we are educated, we have gotten a different view of the disease. We can start at an individual level to help others learn how to handle the infected people

Indeed it is partly due to such ill informed ignorance that some of this issues surrounding HIV are still problematic. We are hampered by the stigma that surrounds this infection, with people unwilling to came up foward for testing or admit to be HIV positve.Indeed it makes some individuals unwilling to accept help and treatment incase 'someone finds out'

Although awareness of HIV and AIDS is high in Kenya, many people living with HIV face high levels of stigma and discrimination which prevent people accessing HIV services.HIV testing, especially the introduction of self-testing kits and counselling (HTC) has become a major feature of Kenya’s HIV response, and a key milestone in the fight against stigma and new HIV infections-Ann Nduta Kimani

  28. The fear of the stigma attached to HIV/AIDS may prevent people from having an HIV test and from seeking treatment. This fear may prevent a person from acknowledging his or her own HIV status. The lack of knowledge on the subject will lead to the HIV positive or AIDS victim being stigmatised or branded. How often have you heard of others not wanting to allow their children to have contact with an HIV positive person? How many people have ended the services of their maid when it was discovered that he/she was HIV positive? Are you willing to be friends with an HIV positive person or with a victim of AIDS? It is the stigma attached to the illness that causes us to feel and think in this manner. The stigma exists in most cases due to ignorance about the illness. Once the stigma exists then the tendency is to discriminate against these people. They are ill and are seen to be untouchable. We incorrectly believe they have a disability that can be spread by touch, by drinking out of the same cup, if they sneeze. We treated them like lepers with a highly infectious disease.

  34. Be available to have open, honest conversations about HIV. People diagnosed with HIV may not always want to talk about or may not be ready. They may want to connect with you in the same ways they did before being diagnosed. Do things you did together before the diagnosis. Show them that you still see them as the same people before they were diagnosed. Encourage them.

  58. Due to existing discrimination against wo-men in various communities attitudes towards those who get infected are often less compared to the attitudes towards men in the same situation.Infected women are often blamed for infecting their husbands and unborn children and are described instigmatising terms such as ‘vectors’, ‘diseased’ and‘prostitutes’* terms that are rarely used when de-scribing infected men.
