Prevention and control of HIV

1.Get tested
The first and the most important step in preventing HIV infection is to know your status.
2.Use of condoms
When used properly, condoms are an effective way to prevent HIV infection which is spread through bodily fluids like blood, semen and vaginal fluids.
3.Limit how many partners you have
Having fewer sexual partners reduces the risk of one being exposed to the virus.
4.Avoid injecting drugs
The use of intravenous drugs put the users at higher risk, since HIV can be spread through blood. Therefore people should avoid injecting drugs and never share needles.
5.Ask doctors about pre-exposure prophylaxis
It is a medication that people without HIV can take daily to prevent infection.when combined with other HIV prevention methods, such as regular testing and use of condoms, will significantly reduce the risk of HIV infection
6.Expectant mothers living with HIV taking HIV treatment (ARVS)
This reduces the risk of passing HIV to babies during pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding.
7.Patients asking healthcare professionals whether the blood products the are receiving (blood transfusion, organ or tissue transplant) has been tested for HIV.
8.Health workers taking precautions such as wearing protection (like gloves), washing hands after contact with blood and other bodily fluids and safely disposing of Sharp equipment.
