FIRST HIV/AIDS VICTIM
It is difficult and most probably impossible to know /figure out the first victim of HIV/AIDS as the disease itself has many theories of origin.
It is believed that the first man to be infected was a Canadian flight attendant named Dagus in 1980’s who is said to have been a gay transmitted the disease to approximately 250 men per year starting the HIV epidemic himself. Computer models have estimated that the first human infection occurred in 1930 thus ruling Dagus out as the first human victim.
Another case of HIV/AIDS was recorded in Northern America with a 16-year-old boy named Rayford. It is said that he had signs and symptoms of AIDS after the doctors did some check up on him. He died in 1968 one year after getting the disease. People said that he was a male prostitute hence ruling him out as a victim as he might have gotten the disease from some of his clients.
Most people believe that the first case of HIV/AIDS occurred in Zaire now known as Democratic Republic of Congo and it was contracted from the chimpanzees during the colonial periods. Some researchers say that a hunter from Zaire was the first to be infected after he killed an infected chimpanzee and in the process of skinning it he cut himself and the chimpanzees blood infected him. Others say that the whites brought the disease upon the Africans during the colonial periods as the whites used to store polio vaccine inside chimpanzee’s blood. They later extracted the polio in one of the chimpanzees which was infected and used the vaccine on the Africans hence transmitting the infection. Others believed that Africans brought it against themselves by having sex with infected chimpanzees while others killed and ate infected chimpanzees hence acquiring the infection.
As all these theories do not have sufficient evidences to prove their claims it is equally the same to say that the first victim of HIV/AIDS will remain a MYSTERY
