THE LIVING MONSTER IN HUMANS.
People can give you names especially if you are a killer
disease, pandemic disease born from human immunodeficiency virus,AIDS, Acquired
Immunodeficiency Syndrome.
The state at which Aids has left orphans, widow's, widowers
and other devastated Kenyans is nothing
to smile about. The lake region seems to be the hot bed in unprotected sex as
it is used as a mode of payment in the fish business leading to the prevalence
in this killer disease among adults.Homabay county comes in first with 25.7%,
followed by siaya county closely at 23.7% and Kisumu county close top three
with 19.3% while Northeastern counties bears the least number of victims.
Half a million youths in kenya have this "wild
animal" only about 195,299 of them are on ARV's and the other 315,000 need
it but are not on treatment. Moreover, the ministry of health said there are 1.6
million people living with this killer virus(HIV).I just wonder how many more
are out are there who have not gone for checkup.
Stigmatization has played a major role in the low number of
youths living with HIV to access treatment. For example Brenda Bakobye 19 years
old is among teenagers living with HIV/AIDS in kenya. luckily she had there school
matron helping her by keeping the drugs and reminding her to replenish. But
eventually her big secret was out and
then the drama started ."Some girls began to avoid me,speaking in
low tones whenever I walked past, lucky enough I was only remaining with a few
months to do my final exams in high school."said Brenda (Nation
standard). And this is just one case.
Some studies have shown that poverty and HIV infection
correlate, but, none has shown whether HIV/AIDS in sub-saharan Africa is an
outcome of poverty.however,we can not dismiss the fact that some of our
neighbours in the rural and even urban areas have been forced into poverty by
this killer disease, through medical expenses, food and many other needs and even
wants. Moreover, poverty itself has been a source of spreading HIV through sex
trade. The extreme level of poverty in our slums has lead our young women to
engage in risky behavior that can easily bring money for survival.
I advocate for sex education to be introduced in schools
right from lower primary. The reason being to create awareness and try to reduce
the curiosity that the young people have in wanting to practice sex before
marriage and I believe it will lower the percentage we have now.And NGO's the
likes of USAID should make more effort to pass out this important information
to the adults both in rural and urban areas , everywhere and anywhere in
churches,nightclubs , chama's ,fishery regions,boda boda Sacco's just where
they can get a chance with the right channel to present something about this
disease, for HIV/AIDS is not a venom snake but a killer disease.
